WOLF PAWS DOG TRAINING

GUIDANCE ON FINDING A TRAINER OR BEHAVIOURIST

***ALL BREEDS OF DOG ARE WELCOME ***

Training is essential - whether its the first dog that you own or your 30th. It doesn't matter if your dog is a beautiful rescue, or a cute little puppy from a breeder. AND NO DOG IS TOO OLD TO LEARN!!

Training and behaviour modification is an important way of helping both you and your dog to get to know and trust each other, and learn each others boundries.

How does your dog learn?

What do you like to do in regards to training?

Are you interested in the clicker training, do you want to do treat rewards or a finish game?

These are all important questions that you should be asking yourself.

It is important for you to find a trainer or behaviourist (depending on what you are needing) - that you can connect with. You should be comfortable to ask your trainer/ behaviourist questions and trust and respect the advice they are giving you. If that is not happening, then I would recommend you find a new trainer/ behaviourist.

Having a difficult time with someone will only hinder your progress, and can make it uncomfortable for you, the trainer and your dog!

The other important part when it comes to finding a trainer or behaviourist is to make sure they are who they say they are. Unfortunately training and behaviour work isn't regulated in the UK. That means that anyone can make claims of being a trainer or a behaviourist. Truth is they may have owned a dog or two and watched a certain 'famous'dog trainer' series on tv and now they think they are an expert!!

This can do a lot more harm than they themselves may even realise. Look for someone who has recognised qualifications (and had hands on practical experience) - Not an online course, from an unrecognised source, that isn't worth the paper its written on. Qualifications aren't the be all and end all, but they do go some way to helping.

If the trainers or behaviourists you are looking at haven't got actual qualifications, then there are things you can look at just like if you were researching someone who does have them:

Ask about their experiences with dogs:

How many years have they been training?

Do they have recommendations on their website/ fb page?

What training methods do they use?

When is the last time they went to a seminar, or did a refresher course?

Can they provide you with people to contact to ask about their experience with the trainer/behaviourist?

IT IS IMPORTANT FOR ALL TRAINERS AND BEHAVIOURISTS TO STAY UP TO DATE WITH NEW INFORMATION, RESEARCH & the SCIENCE BEING RELEASED.

The training method I use is quite unique in comparison to most trainers and behaviourists. I do positive training - clicker, reward and end of exercise game. But to begin with I start with touch training, building a bond with your dog is important - for whatever you want to do. Sometimes there are dogs that are great in their home or controlled environments with a clicker, treats, toys or an end game, however, once they go out into the world those things aren't a high enough value reward. And that's where your strong bond and touch training will come in very useful. You will have the confidence that whatever happens, you will always have that extra something to fall back on. YOU THE OWNER SHOULD ALWAYS BE THE HIGHEST VALUE REWARD TO YOUR PUPPY/DOG.

ALL DOGS THAT I WORK WITH WILL HAVE A BEHAVIOUR ASSESSMENT DONE BEFORE PUTTING A PERSONALISED BEHAVIOUR OR TRAINING PLAN IN PLACE.

All of the plans are written from scratch to suit each dog and owner.  IF FOR ANY REASON I FEEL UNABLE TO HELP YOU AND YOUR DOG/S, I WILL INFORM YOU AND ALSO PUT YOU IN TOUCH WITH SOMEONE THAT IS MORE SUITED TO HELP WITH YOUR ISSUES.
